July has come, and with it has come so much talk about “Plastic-Free July”. While the name is pretty self-explanatory, this article will explore exactly what this means and how it began.
Plastic Free July® is a key initiative of the Plastic Free Foundation, an independent, not-for-profit organization that was officially established in 2017. The Plastic Free July campaign however, first began in 2011, and now works to aid the foundation in their vision of seeing a world free of plastic waste. Plastic Free July was first created by Rebecca Prince-Ruiz and a small team in local government in Western Australia, and now is one of the most influential environmental campaigns in the world. With millions of people across the planet participating each year, Prince-Ruiz eventually went on to found the Plastic Free Foundation. Since its inception, the campaign has been rewarded for its incredibly hard work, including winning Environmental Action and Community Waste Awards in 2018.
